Journey of a DevOps Engineer: From Passion to Profession

Hello! I’m Jakub Szostak, a dedicated and passionate DevOps Engineer currently working at Medius. My journey in the tech world has been driven by a deep interest in cloud technologies, automation, and system optimization. I’m excited to share a bit about myself, my skills, and my experiences in this ever-evolving field.

Professional Path

My professional journey began at Allegro, where I started as a DevOps Intern and then transitioned into a Junior Software Engineer role. This experience laid the foundation for my career, giving me insights into software development and operations. In October 2021, I joined Playbook Engineering as a DevOps Engineer, focusing on Google Cloud technologies. Since September 2023, I’ve been with Medius, where I continue to grow and contribute as a DevOps Engineer specializing in Azure Cloud.

Educational Background

I pursued my education at the Politechnika Krakowska im. Tadeusza Kościuszki, earning a degree in Computer Science. My academic journey culminated in a thesis on “Monitoring Self-Scaling Distributed Applications Using ELK Stack, Prometheus, and Grafana,” reflecting my interest in scalable and efficient systems.

Currently, I am furthering my education by pursuing a master’s degree in the field of Computer Science at the University of the National Education Commission. This advanced study is enabling me to deepen my understanding of complex computing systems and stay abreast of the latest technological advancements. Balancing work and study, I am committed to gaining a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the field, which I believe is crucial for a successful career in DevOps.

This blend of practical experience and academic learning forms the foundation of my approach to DevOps, where theory and practice converge to create innovative solutions.

Skills and Expertise

My skill set is a blend of industry knowledge, tools, and technologies. I have proficiency in Clouds, such as Google Cloud Platform and Azure, Gitlab CI/CD, Azure DevOps, ArgoCD, Kubernetes, ELK Stack (also hosted in K8S with a help of ECK), Prometheus, Grafana, Victoria Metrics, Jenkins, Cloudflare, Terraform, Bicep. My programming skills are anchored in Python, and I’m also well-versed in Linux, Bash, and database management systems like PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL and MongoDB.

Certifications and Achievements

I’m proud to hold certifications such as the Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer and Red Hat System Administration I (RH124), which validate my expertise and commitment to continuous learning.

In addition to my technical skills, I am proficient in English, which has been instrumental in my professional growth and in collaborating with diverse teams.
